The Peppertree Court Machete Attack: A Mother’s Twisted Plot
On October 10, 2018, deputies from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office rushed to a home in the 10100 block of Peppertree Court in Pensacola, Florida. Outside the residence, they discovered an adult woman and her juvenile daughter lying on the ground, suffering from horrific, deep lacerations.
The victims had been targeted in a brutal ambush with a machete. While both miraculously survived after being rushed to local emergency rooms, the subsequent police investigation uncovered a disturbing web of manipulation, coercion, and family betrayal that shocked the nation.
The Ambush and the Motive
According to court records, the mastermind of the attack was 35-year-old Candie Lynn Walker. Driven by deep-seated resentment toward her estranged husband’s new girlfriend, Walker devised a deadly plan to eliminate her romantic rival.
Instead of executing the crime herself, Walker manipulated her 16-year-old daughter, Hannah Fine, into doing the dirty work. During the trial, shocking details emerged: Fine testified that her mother pressured her intensely to commit the murders, even threatening to severely “ground” her if she failed to kill the woman.
On the evening of the crime, Fine’s 15-year-old boyfriend, Deshawn Donson, acted as the getaway driver, transporting Fine to the Peppertree Court residence. Fine emerged from the vehicle armed with a long machete, gloves, and a mask, launching a relentless assault on the unsuspecting mother and child before fleeing the scene with Donson.
The Arrest and Severe Legal Consequences
The victims recognized Hannah Fine during the assault and named her to investigators while recovering in the hospital. Following a swift interrogation, Fine confessed to the plot, directing police to her grandmother’s car where detectives recovered the blood-soaked machete, hoodie, and mask. Fine ultimately agreed to cooperate with the State and testify against her mother.
The legal fallout for the trio was swift and severe:
- Candie Lynn Walker was convicted of solicitation to commit first-degree premeditated murder and principal to attempted first-degree premeditated murder. In January 2020, a judge sentenced her to 55 years in state prison.
- Hannah Fine was charged as an adult and pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder, burglary, and aggravated battery, receiving a 15.5-year prison sentence.
- Deshawn Donson pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to a felony and was sentenced to 15 months in prison followed by 40 months of probation.
The case remains one of Florida’s most harrowing examples of parental manipulation, proving that sometimes the real monster isn’t the one swinging the blade, but the one pulling the strings from the shadows.
