~As Carlos Asencio prepared to call a cab to ride to O’Connor’s Restaurant & Bar on West Boylston Street in Worcester, he stressed over what he was going to wear.

~He appeared to be in high spirits. It was the first glimmer of hope he’d shown in days, maybe much longer, Lydia Elaine Willey recalls.

~Lydia had met Carlos weeks earlier hanging out at a Worcester bus stop. She was living homeless in the city with her fiancé, Richie Contreras, and had sensed something was wrong. Carlos wasn’t one of the usual faces on the street.

~”He just seemed to come from nowhere,” she said.He also seemed troubled, sad.

~She gave him her cell phone number. A week later he called, looking for help. Lydia and Richie invited Carlos to stay with them in the abandoned trailer they were living in off Grafton Street. They didn’t know a lot about their new friend, but they knew he was suicidal.

~At the time, they didn’t know two bags that Caelos kept with him held homemade explosives. They wouldn’t discover the contents of those bags until it was too late.

~“The instant I met him I knew there was something wrong,” she said. “I knew I had to help him, that I wanted to fix him. I just didn’t know how ill-equipped I really was.”

Richie knew Carlos had an arrest warrant. He eventually told the couple after they’d befriended him, but they didn’t know the details, Richie said.

~The story Carlos told them didn’t always add up, the couple said. He told them he’d gotten into a fight with his ex-girlfriend and another man, that he’d pulled out a gun to defend himself and that’s why he was wanted.

~They suspected there was more to the story and hoped that he would open up to them.

~For two days, Lydia said she walked around the city with Carlos. He told her he’d tried to kill himself before.

~ He told the couple he had been staying wherever he could, sleeping on a set of steps in Worcester one night. Other nights he stayed at a crack house, although he said he didn’t do drugs.

~Carlos had money on him and people were trying to get it from him, he told them. But

~“He was very quiet most times,”Lydia said. “He would talk and we would be having conversation and then he would just stop. And I could tell he was really stuck inside himself.”

~On Wednesday, July 3, about 48 hours after Carlos had come to stay with the couple, he told Lydia he was going out.

~“The only time I saw him really in high spirits was when he said he was going to dinner at O’Connor’s,” Lydia said. “I was poking fun at him because he was stressing out over what he should wear and I said ‘Ooo, it must be a girl’ and he said it was.”

~The last time Lydia and Richie saw Carlos he was walking to meet a cab, on his way to O’Connor’s.

~At O’Connor’s, Amanda was attending a Meetup group, “O’Connor’s Books, Brews & Banter Reading Group.” It was Amanda’s first time meeting them. They were discussing the book “Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise,” by Ruth Reichl.

~At just before 8 p.m., Amanda excused herself from the group and headed to the ladies room.

~According to court records, security cameras showed Carlos walking back and forth in the restaurant in what police say was a search for Amanda. As she exited the ladies room, the two met.

~Then screams brought the entire restaurant to a halt.

~Witnesses rushed to help as police say Carlos was holding a knife in each hand, rapidly stabbed Amanda 15 to 20 times before bystanders were able to bring him to the ground.

~ As Carlos wrestled with the men he shouted, “Kill me. Kill me. I deserve to die,” one of the men told police. But

~A witness told police they heard Amanda say, “Oh my God, how did you get back into the country?”

~Amanda was laying On the ground when Emergency Responders arrived. She drifted in and out of consciousness according to reports for the significant amount of blood loss.

~@ 11:42pm Amanda was pronounced dead at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

~On Friday, Carlos was arraigned in Worcester Central District Court. He was sent to Bridgewater State Hospital to undergo a 20-day mental health evaluation.

~He is facing numerous charges, including murder.

~Not guilty pleas were entered on his behalf. Amanda’s family attended the arraignment, but did not want to talk to media, asking for privacy while they grieved.

~According to Amanda’s Instagram account, she’d moved back to Massachusetts last year after living in Florida for a time. She was glad to be back in the Boston area.

~Carlos had fallen far by the time he was living on the streets of Worcester. He attended high school at Pinkerton Academy, a privately-run school in Derry, New Hampshire and went on to get a degree in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Connecticut, graduating in 2012.

~More recently, he’d been working as a Quality Assurance Specialist at Bristol-Myers Squibb in Danvers. It was there he met Amanda. The two dated for three months before the relationship ended. Amanda told police back in April, Carlos did not take the breakup well.

~She was his first real girlfriend, Carlos later told Willey.

~In court on Friday July 5th forensic psychologist Dr. Stephanie Hansen, who examined Carlos said the man had been hearing voices in his head for the past two years.

~In recent months, it has progressed into explosive episodes and anger. Issues stretched back years, however, with Dr. Hansen reporting Carlos had attempted suicide back in 2008. Recently, he’d put a knife to his own neck, she said.

~On Easter morning of this year, Amanda awoke in her home in Ayer around 2:30am to sounds downstairs. When she went to investigate she found a partially opened window as well as a bag, handcuffs and straps on the floor.

~As she examined them she caught a glimpse of a masked man coming out of the bathroom. The attacker hit her with a stun gun in the hip and shoulder. Amanda fought back.

~According to court records, Amanda hit her attacker in the head with a bottle of alcohol. As he tried to strangle her she tried to “bite his fingers off,” she later told police.I

~ She broke free and grabbed a kitchen knife. He pulled a gun. The man pointed it at her and told her to get on her knees.

~Amanda screamed at him asking what he wanted. He said nothing, she later told police. He only made a motion with his hand across his throat. “He wanted me dead,” she later said.

~Amanda later told police, that she looked into her attacker’s eyes and saw fear. She seized the moment and fought back.

~ As the two struggled for the gun, court records state the attacker fell halfway out a window. Seeing an opportunity, Amanda gave him a shove, sending him falling out the rest of the way.

~Amanda told police the man who attacked her reminded her a lot of her ex-boyfriend, who she’d seen driving by her house days earlier.

~Police began a search for Carlos and eventually would track him to Canada where they learned he’d used his U.S. passport and boarded a plane to Cancun, Mexico, less than nine hours after the attack.

~A bag with Amanda’s cell phone, which went missing during the attack, was found off Route 93 in Bow, New Hampshire, along with knives, duct tape and .380 bullets.

~Because police had requested an emergency ping on Amanda’s phone. At 4:37 a.m. It was tracked tracking East on Route 2.

~20 minutes later it was tracked traveling North on I-495 toward Lowell. By 5am the phone was in Nashua, New Hampshire, where Carlos was living at the time.

~The phone continued to travel North through Merrimack, Bedford and Hooksett. By 6am it remained stationary between Bow and Pembroke until it powered off.

~Court records show Amanda filed a complaint for a restraining order on May 2nd. The order expired on June 3rd.

~Two days after she filed the restraining order police records show, she personally went into the Webster Police Department over a “concerning e-mail” she’d received from Carlos. Amanda told officers “she did not feel safe!”

~On May 18th Amanda reported another threaten email and the strange calls she’d been receiving.

~Two Weeks later police report state that Amanda’s parents came into the Webster Police Department when they noticed a drone continuously flying over their Webster home. Reports state that the drone had not ever been seen till April when Amanda moved in after the home invasion.

~Authorities have not released information on when or how Carlos returned to the U.S. According to the warrant for Carlos’s arrest, the warrant was entered into the National Crime Information Center five days after the attack. It should have triggered an alert if he’d tried to board a plane back to the U.S. His re-entry into the country is under investigation by federal authorities.

~Back at the trailer where Lydia and Richie were staying, one of Carlos bags had gotten knocked over. Gasoline came pouring out.

~Inside the bag the couple found duct tape, binoculars, a box of screws and fully made Molotov cocktails. They saw he had a U.S. passport.

~They ran down the road to where a police officer was stationed and waved him down.Lydia and Richie led police under a bridge and over a fence to the abandoned trailer.

~Police were there until 11 p.m. that night investigating the scene.

~The couple have not returned to the trailer since.

~Two days after Amanda was murdered her parents made a discovery that all but confirmed that Carlos was monitoring Amanda’s every move, prior to her death.

~Police records show a cell phone was duct taped to the bottom of Amanda’s car. It’s believed Carlos was using the phones GPS to track her.

~”We will continue to fight for her so hopefully someone else can have a better chance and it not be unfair like it was with our daughter ” Stated Ed Dabrowski

~On Friday July 26,2019 Judge James G.Haddad deemed Carlos not competent to stand trial base on Bridgewater State Hospital evaluation that was ordered on July 5th when he was arraigned.😲😤
